Founder of Marcopolo Restaurant
Rubiolo Battista, fondly known as Robi, is an Italian chef, adventurer, photographer and writer. A native of Turin, a city in northern Italy and a true lover of Nepal, he is credited for introducing native Italian food in Nepal. He established Marcopolo Restaurant in Thamel in 1987 and became one of the most cherished chefs among the travelling community in Nepal.
Noted for his authentic homemade recipes blended with refreshing creativity, he is the one who showed that Italian food world is more than pizza and pasta. As a travel enthusiast, he visited Nepal 80 times between 1974 to 2018. He has complimented his remarkable journey in Nepal, his second home, in his book “Mio Nepal” (My Nepal).
Tucked away from the busy streets of the Thamel area in Kathmandu we stumbled onto this place our first day here. We've been here 4 times in the last 2 weeks. If you need a break from trekking food this is the place to go. Pizzas (we stuck to vegetarian at $4-5 ) are delicious and the pastas ($4 - $6) are freshly prepared. One of our party is quite partial to the pork chop ($8). It is a large portion and comes with 4 different sauce options. Recently opened, the staff are very friendly and attentive and trying hard to get this place off the ground. The cocktails are delicious and currently they have 15% off all food and drink. I couldn't recommend this place more.
This place has amazing Italian food right in the heart of the lively Thamel district in Kathmandu. We came here on a Friday night as a group after a long trek in the Himalayas - we were tired, hungry and itching to finally have a good meal after many days eating the same food in high-altitude tea houses. Thankfully, the restaurant obliged. Given the size of our group, we had a set menu that consisted of a tasty salad appetizer, a choice of a tomato, basil and cheese pizza or a penne pasta with ragu sauce and a chocolate ice cream desert. Granted, its nothing revolutionary, but the food consisted of classic Italian dishes made well and with quality ingredients, which was exactly what we were looking for. If you're searching for a good restaurant that's different from the typical Nepalese food you'll find in Thamel, then this place is a great option!
Heard about this new Marco Polo Italian restaurant and just checked it out! Ordered a pizza - it was delicious. Crispy thin bottom and tasty topping with enough cheese serve in a nice atmosphere Would advice it to anybody!
If you want to have great food in a restaurant that offers great service in a very nice setting then this is the best place I have found.
From the moment we arrived the Marco Polo team were great, we had a great welcome when we arrived, the staff are so friendly. We have nothing but compliments with regards to the meal and service, the food was excellent, our thanks to the chef! The pizza oven was fantastic! The best pizza in Kathmandu
Overall a great experience, I have been to Kathmandu many times and this is my new favourite restaurant. From now on I will make sure to recommend this place to everyone.
I’m not really a pizza person, unless I’m in Italy, but I got a craving for pizza and saw a sign for Marco Polo Restaurant. Wasn’t disappointed! Nice pizza, the way it should be - a handful of different flavors with a thin, edible crust! Comfortable restaurant, good service, didn’t wait too long - can’t wait til they get sparkling water on the menu tho!
